In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Peter Rosenthal

June 5, 2024 by Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics community mourns the loss of Peter Rosenthal, a distinguished scholar and beloved professor. Rosenthal began his remarkable career at U of T in 1967 and quickly established himself as a leading expert in operator theory. Over his 40-year tenure, he made significant contributions to the field, mentoring 15 PhD students, with the last graduating in 2011.

In a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and justice, Rosenthal pursued an advanced law degree at the age of 47, subsequently becoming an adjunct professor at the U of T Faculty of Law. His dedication to human rights and advocacy was recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize, the BADC Award for Advocacy on behalf of Canadians of African Descent, and a Law Society Medal, awarded by the Law Society of Canada.

Peter will be deeply missed by his colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. A graveside funeral was held on Wednesday 29 May at Beth Tzedek Memorial Park, 5822 Bathurst Street. A larger memorial service is expected in a few months and will be announced when more information is available.
