Bálint Virág named 2024 Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

The Department of Mathematics is pleased to announce that Bálint Virág has been named to the 2024 class of Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). This prestigious recognition is reserved for Canadians who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life. 

Alain-G. Gagnon, FRSC, President of the RSC, praised the new Fellows: “The Royal Society of Canada is very proud to welcome today an imposing group of inspiring scholars, artists, and creators whose peers have recognized their exceptional contributions to the world of science and culture and to the well-being of Canada.”

Virág, a world-renowned expert in probability theory, has made groundbreaking contributions to geometric group theory, random analytic functions, random matrix theory, and KPZ universality. His work continues to influence research across the field.

The 2024 Fellows will be officially inducted on Friday, November 8, 2024, at the RSC’s Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in Vancouver, British Columbia.
