Mary Pugh has been named the recipient of the Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award, which celebrates exceptional contributions to undergraduate and graduate education. The award highlights excellence in classroom instruction, course design, and curriculum development.
Reacting to the news, Pugh shared:
I am surprised and delighted to win this award. I love teaching! My work is only as good as the people I work with and so I am grateful to, and thank, the students, TAs, co-instructors, course coordinators, and staff I have worked with over the years.
Pugh obtained her BA in Mathematics at UC Berkeley before completing her PhD in Mathematics at the University of Chicago. Her first position was at the Courant Institute (NYU), where she was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow and a Courant Instructor. She was also a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study, and later an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Pugh is currently a Professor at the University of Toronto. She has published nearly 30 articles, has held elected positions within the AMS and SIAM, has served on various AMS and SIAM committees, is on the editorial board for three journals, and has delivered over 140 invited talks.
