Summer Camps

The Math Outreach office is excited to offer in-person and online Summer camps this year! Below, you will find the schedule and dates for the 2024 term. We will be offering some special themes and formats this Summer.

Summer Math Camp (July 8 - 12 2024, In-Person) - Registrations are Full

We offer free before-care from 8-9AM (every day except Monday), and after-care from 4-6PM (every day). You do not need to sign up for this.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: This camp invites learners to explore the exciting world of mathematics through fun and interactive games. Through puzzles and logic-based games, students will practice basic fundamental operations like counting and pattern recognition, while developing problem-solving skills. Each lesson is designed to engage students’ critical thinking in a fun, hands-on way!

Fee: $385

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: This camp delves into the fascinating world of triangles around us. From Pascal’s Triangle and the Sierpinski Triangle to the intricate patterns found in tangrams, origami and architecture, students will start to see where triangular patterns show up in our everyday world. Students will explore this phenomena while learning foundational concepts in trigonometry, algebra, geometry and patterning through engaging hands-on activities and interactive projects.

Course Description: Join us for an exciting Mission to Mars! In this course, we'll explore how we can use math to reach Mars and sustain a colony. Through understanding the mathematics of structural design and spatial reasoning, students will design their own spacecraft and rovers for their own missions while learning about the essential features needed for survival and gathering data about Mars. This course offers an insightful journey into the challenges and possibilities of space exploration.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: In this camp, students will get to create their own board game using math concepts learned in class. Each day, students will learn new math concepts and different ways they apply to logic, strategy and games. Throughout the week, students will refine their games by applying new concepts and rigorously testing their games. By the end of the course, campers will have developed a comprehensive understanding of game theory and design, and get a chance to play each others' games

Online Math and/or Coding Camp (July 22–26 2024, Online)

Schedule: Monday - Friday 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM and 12:15pm - 1:45pm (ET - Local Toronto Time)

Course Description: Join us on an exciting journey to explore how mathematics is intertwined in the world around us! From the intricate patterns in games and puzzles to the logic behind shape transformations and numerical arrangements, students are sure to see the correlation between mathematics and our daily lives. This course covers a range of fundamental principles and topics, including algebraic reasoning, geometry, and pattern identification, through a series of hands-on projects and activities.

Course Description: Coding at all levels have one thing in common; they all depend on logical reasoning, problem solving and mathematics. In this course, students will explore the beautiful connection between Math and Coding through fun and interactive projects that help them understand the basics of coding. Relevant Coding Language: Python

Note: This is an introductory course, if you have a coding background, you may consider joining the Gr 7/8 coding camp.

Course Description: This camp explores number theory through a wide range of fun concepts and topics! Throughout the week, students will get an opportunity to explore a wide range of branches in number theory ranging from proofs and problem solving techniques used in games and puzzles to the importance of cryptography used throughout history. Students will also learn concepts such as divisibility and modular arithmetic, and understand how these concepts are used in modern day.

Course Description: This course offers an introductory exploration into proof-based mathematics, focusing on fundamental concepts and techniques. Throughout the course, students will become familiarized with abstraction, rigour, logic, and proofs. Students will delve into elementary logic and various methods of proof, such as contradiction, contrapositive, and induction. By the end of the course, students will be comfortable in reading, writing, and understanding mathematical statements and arguments.

Note: This course is similar to the Grade 7/8 Spring Enrichment: Exploring Mathematical Proofs course. It will cover similar introductory proof techniques, but applied in different topics and problems in mathematics.

Summer Math Camp (August 19 - 23 2024, In-Person) - Registrations are Full

Course Description: In this camp, learners will have the opportunity to explore the intersection between mathematics and art through hands-on activities, including drawing, painting, and origami. Campers will engage with various artistic mediums while developing their understanding of fundamental concepts such as counting, geometry, and patterns. This camp develops collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through creative applications of art and mathematics.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: In this camp, students will be investigating shapes in different dimensions. Learners will explore different shapes in 2 dimension and 3 dimension through hands-on activities investigating cross-sections, symmetries, and constructing objects. Later, students will more abstractly explore higher dimensional shapes.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: This summer camp is built for students who love mathematics, but are more visual-spatial learners. Through hands-on activities and manipulatives, campers will interact with 3D shapes, patterns, games, cryptography and logic. Through daily activities and challenges, students will exercise their problem-solving skills in a fun and co-operative way. By the end of the week, students will leave the camp with a broader understanding of what mathematics is, outside of basic numbers and operations.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Course Description: This course investigates various mathematical principles that have been applied to artistic expression. Students will explore a variety of mathematical topics including chaos theory, geometric constructions, topology, prime numbers, and graph theory, uncovering how these concepts can inspire and inform art. Through hands-on projects, students will utilize mathematical algorithms and concepts to create artwork and decode the mathematical underpinnings of existing art.

Course Description: In this camp, students will learn about the mathematical principles that lie at the heart of computing. Diving into the fundamentals of graph theory, binary numbers, and Boolean logic, students will develop their ability to reason about concepts used by mathematicians and computer scientists every day. Each day will be packed with exciting games and projects that will foster inductive thinking, curiosity, and fun!

Course Description: Galileo famously said that “mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe”! Modelling is a technique used in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science, where mathematicians analyze a physical or theoretical system and model them in an easy-to-understand way. In this camp, students will be introduced to the many uses of mathematical models, and have the opportunity to practice mathematical modelling on a final project of their choice. This camp is great for anyone who is interested in exploring real world word problems and improving their mathematical translation skills.

August High School Math Programs

Date: August 12 - 16 2024

Location: Zoom (Online)

Schedule: 10AM - 11:30AM and 12 PM to 1:30 PM (students are to attend both times)

Course Description: This course is intended to support the transition from middle school to the greater complexity of high school math. It is intended for students who have completed grade 8 math and are looking for extra support to ensure success next year. The Grade 9 Math Preparation Course will review concepts in the grade 8 curriculum that are foundational and touch on some of the most central concepts of the grade 9 curriculum.

Fee: 270 + Tax
